In the United Kennel Club the Hungarian Wire-Haired Vizsla (HWV) follows point system #1, meaning they are a breed with no other varieties.
All dogs must earn a minimum of 100 Champion points and three wins with competition under three different Judges to earn it's UKC Championship title.
Points are earned as follows:
A first place class win earns 10 points: this can be from any licensed regular class.
Best Male and Best Female earn 15 points: There does not need to be another Hungarian Wire-Haired Vizsla of the same sex entered to gain these additional points.
Best of Winners earns 10 points: The Best Male HWV and Best Female HWV compete against each other. The WINNER earns an additional 10 points. There MUST be a Hungarian Wire-Haired Vizsla of the opposite sex entered to earn these points.
As long as the Judge does not withhold a placement award then the appropriate points will be awarded to the dog, regardless of how many dogs are entered at the class level in a breed. No additional points are earned for any other wins such as Best in Breed, Groups, or Best in Show. Any of the following count as a Competition win:
The class dog who wins Best Male or Best Female over another Hungarian Wire-Haired Vizsla of the same sex.
The class dog who wins Best of Winners having done so over another Hungarian Wire-Haired Vizsla of the opposite sex.
If the class dog is awarded the Best of Breed win OVER either Champions or Grand Champion Hungarian Wire-Haired Vizslas.
If yours is the only Hungarian Wire-Haired Vizsla entered in order to gain a competition win, the dog
would have to either:
1. Place in Group competition (if groups are held), above another dog. Example: If there are 4 Gun Dog breeds represented in the group you would need to place 1-3rd to gain the competition win. In short you must beat one dog in the group.
2. Be awarded a Best In Multi-Breed or Reserve Best In Multi-Breed
Show.
Often asked is "What is the difference between a Grand Champion title and a Champion title"?
Simply put to become a Champion a Hungarian Wire-Haired Vizsla needs to win over dogs of any breed but to become a Grand Champion they MUST beat other Champion Hungarian Wire-Haired Vizslas.
To earn a Grand Champion title the following is required:
A Champion dog must win the Champions class a minimum of 5 times, against a minimum of 2 other Champions (making 3 Champions entered in total), under 3 different judges. In addition if the Champion dog was to take Best of Breed over Grand Champions they too would count towards the required 2 dog minimum.
